Real talk, over the past 10 months we’ve been building SPORTAMii, and we wanted to share a little more about the story behind the name.
When the idea for the app first came to us, we were SO excited. But we also knew we didn’t want to rush into anything. We said to ourselves, “Okay… let’s sit on this idea for a few weeks and if we’re still this passionate about it afterwards, then maybe that’s a sign we should seriously explore it.”
Safe to say… we couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Then came one of the hardest parts: choosing a name.
We brainstormed for weeks and honestly got nowhere. Every time we thought we had finally come up with a good one… it was taken.
And honestly, finding a name these days is HARD. You don’t just need the name itself — you need the website domain, Instagram handle, TikTok account, YouTube, LinkedIn… and somehow they all need to still be available too. It felt impossible at times.
We wanted something that felt clear enough for people to instantly understand the vibe, but not something overly corporate or cheesy like “Sports Connect” or “Find Sport Friends.” That just wasn’t us. We wanted the name to feel playful, community-focused, welcoming, and a little different.
Then one morning, I woke up to a text from my mum saying:
“What about SPORTAMI?”
Instantly we loved it.
It felt simple, memorable, and meaningful. Canada is such a beautifully diverse country with both English and French influences, so incorporating “ami” — the French word for “friend” — felt really special to us.
SPORT + AMI = your sports friend!
But then we added the extra “ii” at the end to make it feel even more playful and unique. To us, the two i’s almost look like two people standing side by side — you and your SPORTAMii. And once we saw that, we knew it was the one.
It’s funny looking back now because something as small as a name ended up carrying so much meaning. At the heart of this app has always been one simple idea: helping people find connection through movement.
So that’s the story behind how SPORTAMii was born.
