70% of our users are women and some people might look at that number and think it’s something we should be worried about.
We see it completely differently.
We’re actually so proud.
And the truth is, this is something we had a feeling would happen from the very beginning.
When I first moved to Whistler, I found it surprisingly difficult to make new friends. I wasn’t someone who was interested in going out partying, I didn’t work in the typical seasonal staff scene, and outside of a few activities, there weren’t many obvious places where adults could go to intentionally make friends.
I joined yoga and Pilates classes, but even then, it wasn’t always easy to turn showing up somewhere into actually making a connection.
And it wasn’t because people weren’t friendly.
It was because people are often shy. Everyone is waiting for someone else to start the conversation. Everyone wants connection, but taking that first step can feel intimidating.
I even saw this with friends. One friend loved golf, but none of her close friends played. She wasn’t looking for anything complicated, she just wanted someone to enjoy an activity with.
These moments kept adding up.
The more people I spoke to, the more I realized there was a huge number of people looking for the same thing: someone to go hiking with, someone to play tennis with, someone to try a new activity with, or simply someone to say, “Want to come along?”
And while SPORTAMii is for everyone, I think it makes sense that so many women have connected with it.
I’m a woman, so naturally, many of the stories I heard while creating SPORTAMii came from women. But I also think women often feel more comfortable opening up about wanting connection, wanting community, and wanting to make new friends.
And honestly? We think that’s pretty amazing.
Because this community is showing something really special: people are willing to put themselves out there when they’re given a space that makes it easier.
So when we see that 70% of SPORTAMii is women, we don’t see a problem.
We see loads of women choosing friendship, adventure, and community.
And we’re so excited to see where this grows next.
